Why should I hire a Doula or Birth Coach?
Many couples/mama’s are faced with a million things they are told they “need” during pregnancy, labour and the early days of new parenting. You already have a Dr or Midwife on your birthing team why invest in the extra for a Doula?
Doulas and Childbirth Education Coaches are not something new to the world of birth even if they do seem like the latest trend, looking back in history it is traditional amongst many cultures to have a woman supporting a labouring mother. A doula provides sisterly support or has been referred to mothering the mother. They provide mental, physical and emotional support to the mother or couple.
Some reasons why a Doula or Childbirth Coaching are beneficial during your birthing process…
It’s all about you!! Regardless if you are working with a birth coach or have a doula present at your birth - the focus is entirely you, your needs and requirements during pregnancy, labour and beyond!
Continuity of care! From the moment you start working with your doula or coach they are your person! A neutral, educated person in the world of natural childbirth that you can turn to for information and confide in. There is no shift change, 10 minute slot appointments, just another mother birthing attitudes.
An open minded person to help you navigate through the piles of conflicting internet articles out there during pregnancy, labour and postpartum.
We work WITH the Drs and Midwives (should you opt or require a hospital birth or at home) whilst they are focused on the medical side of things we are there to make sure your needs are met mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Support for your partner so he/she can rest and know you are in good hands. We work as a team to ensure you are supported around the clock. If you dont want a doula present your partner is fully educated on how to be supportive and what to expect.
To empower your partner, yourself or personally advocate your birth wishes when you may hit the point of exhaustion and gently remind you of those.
It has been noted 2012 Hodnett et al. published an updated study in the Cochrane review about women being supported through childbirth. Out of 22 compiled trials and 15,000 women there was dramatic evidence that those women with birth knowledge and support were less likely to have pain meds, epidurals, negative feelings toward birth, cesareans and for baby to have a higher Apgar Score.
Now if that’s not reason enough to invest in childbirth education or a Doula I don’t know what is!!
The way I work is as a childbirth coach I can educate and empower you and your partner, sister, mum or friend to be your support person during birth. So they essentially play the role of your Doula.
As a Doula I educate and empower a mother to be or couple in the lead up to birth to make choices that feel right for you. I also am there through the birthing process to be your support.
